Tips For Maintaining Your Wood Windows And Doors

If you have a home that has wooden doors, wooden window frames, or wooden shutters, then you are going to need to take good care of them in order to keep them looking their best. Here are some tips for doing so.

1. Clean the Wood Itself

Your first step is to get into the habit of periodically cleaning the wood of the door or the window frame itself. You need to get rid of the dust and the dirt on a regular basis because it tends to be acidic. If an acidic material is left on the door, shutter, or window frame over time, then the finish will dissolve and your wood will look worse and be unprotected. You can get rid of this acidic solution by taking a clean rag and applying a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap to its surface. Then, take the rag and start wiping down your wooden window frames, shutters, and doors. Once you've wiped one down, immediately take another clean rag, this time dry, and remove any soapy residue. Allow the window to dry the rest of the way on its own. If need be, add a layer of wood luster product to the wood. Make sure that it doesn't have any oil or wax in it.

2. Clean the Glass

Once the wood is clean, you need to tackle the glass. First, remove loose dirt using a rag. Then, take a mixture of vinegar and water and apply it to a second rag. Start wiping the center of the glass and move in a circular spiral outwards. Then, take a small squeegee and use it to remove the water. If any of the water gets on the wood, take a dry rag and use it to remove the water on the wooden frame. Allow the glass to dry.

3. Clean the Screen

If you have an insect screen applied to your window or door, you can either remove it and soak it in water in a kiddie pool for ten to fifteen minutes and then wipe it down with a rag, or you can simply apply rubbing alcohol to the rag and wipe it down while it is still in its frame. This will allow you to get rid of any dust and dirt that could impede air circulation.
